There was an attempt.
A campaigner managed to get the courts to issue a verdict that the referendum was not binding, and Parliament must then have a vote on whether or not to implement the result.
Parliament then duly voted to implement the result.
Packages are code, in large part, and they probably represent the main value and work product of a distribution (though a lot of automation already exists for this). I would not be surprised if an LLM could manage most of the day-to-day effort of creating and maintaining a standard debian package. The other main part that is valuable, though, is the process of getting all those packages to play nicely with each other, which is a bit more political and probably will not benefit so much from LLMs, other than perhaps making some approaches or experiments lower effort.
Good to see that people still have this spirit of rolling their sleeves up and doing something like this for fun. Underneath it there is a very real point about mono-cultures and the increased magnitude of the impact of a risk, although more eyes checking one implementation should reduce the probability.
I thought the exact same thing and that's what I would do too(I didn't). This is from the official openpgp repository and you end up asking your self these things.
PGP is set up in a way where this wouldn't be that hard either. You could easily encrypt every message with a master key so that every PGP message sent would be decryptable. That's how group messaging works, everyone encrypts the same message with everyone's key. Otherwise you would not be able to read your own outbound main for instance.
The hardest thing you would have to do is hide the fact that your key exists inside the source code, as well as the instruction set to encrypt it with this key.
But what will be the safe places people could migrate to? I'm not sure we can really predict this, especially since the least affected locations are going to be the ones everybody will be interested in. And given the ramping-up xenophobia I can't imagine climate refugees suddenly being welcomed with open arms...
Oh how I wish modern chat platforms would let me use a client of my own choosing. It's all so locked down and usually garbage-tier because the user has no choice.
I would say it's only really a burden if you fight it, or don't expect to have to do it and right at the end someone asks "er... does this work without JavaScript?". My attitude is that it's a combination of freeing and a challenge: "we can and should make it simple, even boring"
Automatic enforcement for all services is tricky, because you _can_ depend on JavaScript if the user needs justify it.

Apparently their intended net access went through a tightly controlled proxy. Even that appears to be very risky, tbh.
If I was to setup a sandbox for such a complex and autonomous system, I'd probably point them to an archive-like cache for net access and cut their comms at the package level.
Only when threatened and self-defense has to be proportionate. If someone attacks you with a knife you would not be allowed to defend yourself with a firearm if you had one.
This is very different from the law in Texas, where, from what I understand, if you catch someone in the night stealing you could just kill them even if they never threatend you.
Statistically, sure, but it's not evenly distributed across regions and cultures. People can find themselves in social circles where iMessage is the norm and be pressured into using it because others are unwilling to install a second messaging app.
thanks to the author of the article, it inspired me to try making a small gui app i wanted for long time - it simply reads and shows the contents of the system clipboard in a window. and it was really super easy, i didn't need xcode, only `swiftc` from command line. honestly i didn't know i can make an app without opening xcode, now i want to make more :) so i made the app with approx 500 lines of Swift, with keyboard hotkeys for navigation and style change (fonts, colors, window size), just the way i love it.

all this in one day, with huge help of duck.ai which is completely free. the app size is approx 300kb. using it feels great because i can do the whole cycle with keyboard only:
- cmd+space to open spotlight search
- type the name of the app, enter, it opens a new window with clipboard contents, i inspect it with keyboard hotkeys only
- cmd+q to exit or cmd+tab to switch back to the prev app
for me personally the standard gui apps are annoying because of the standard kb shortcuts - they are hard to remember and even hard to reach. i prefer "sort of vi navigation" because i can keep my hands for navigation at the same position as for typing.
On a related note, there is a reasonably well known commentary on an adjacent technology by Ruth Schwartz Cowan (1985) titled "How The Refrigerator Got Its Hum". It describes a 1930s market battle between heat-driven ad/absorption chiller technology ("Kelvinator") and work-driven compressor chiller technology ("GE"). Tl;DR GE won.
The ab-chiller is likely best known these days as the "propane fridge" in RVs.
Sadly, the only online resources for Cowan's work I can find are either Scribd paywalled [1], the entire book in which Cowan's piece is a chapter on the Internet Archive [2] or a pointer-to-a-pointer from a piece in the Guardian [3] to a boingboing piece [4] that seems to be offline.
(Background: I work in Direct-Use geothermal. Such ad/absorption chillers are one major tool in the toolbox for low-T cases where it is uneconomical to turn geothermal heat into electrical energy -- mostly due to Carnot's Law considerations.)
