Reminds me a bit of SQLite in those respects.
Why come up with your own binary filestructure? Just use SQLite!

Also worth mentioning is BSDDB. Sometimes you don't want to bother with SQL and BSDDB is always there for you :).

PhysicsFS is pretty excellent if you need more of a traditional hierarchy layout.
