This is such an important project that I think I will setup a recurring monthly donation.
I mostly use Calc and I’ve held back donating because honestly it is not that good (irrational, I know). Specially if you’re an excel power-ish user.
But lately it has been satisfying all my personal spreadsheet needs. Even though it has major pain points. I’ve tried every other spreadsheet app in Linux and honestly they all suck.
I guess our best bet is to rally behind this project and hope it gets as good as Linux so that it really competes with office.
Kudos to the team and really excited to try the pivot tables calculated formulas. Pivot table feature parity is what I am missing the most!
* UX/UI issues. For example, in dark mode I can barely see some icons. This is minor.
* Laggy scrolling. If your mouse scrolls too fast the spreadsheet doesn’t go as fast.
* Buggy automatic range detection. If you add more rows at the end of a dataset the auto filter won’t detect those new records even after reset.
The interface was designed at least 20 years ago and hasn't kept up. They've been gluing on elements of newer UIs but keeping the old around. You can keep an Office 2003 style menu but also have an Office 2007+ ribbon to very quickly make it an unintelligble mess. Other contemporary Office suites like OnlyOffice handled things so much better by comparison.
Smaller elements such as just trying to do something where you knew where it was in Word versus LibreOffice is also a convoluted mess. PivotTables for example in Calc are almost complete nonsense.
Has anyone tested this release on macOS yet? I'm particularly interested in whether the UI improvements and spreadsheet performance feel noticeably better on Mac compared with the previous release.
LibreOffice is so great, It has evolved a lot, and it's so much better than the microslop alternative. I just reaally hope that more and more universities and institutions accept the .odt document format!
I used to think LibreOffice was too far behind the times to be relevant, but now I see a big new use case for people wanting to avoid LLM integrations/data exfiltration. I wish them much success!
I have been extensively using LibreOffice alongside office 2019 (using Massgrave)
And it is converging more and more.
I use it as my day tool as a lawyer, I use writer and calc alongside office tools and i see formatting issues coming less and less. This is after me using it day for 3-4 years daily.
Every update makes improvements.
Sure its "slow" at features but I'm not interested in "ai" features so it's fine.
It inherits all problems of desktop office, collaboration is hit as two people cannot work on the same file but it is "fine" for average user.
I follow the "meta onlyoffice comparison for writer/calc" and every 6 months or so it there is some improvement.
This is such an important tool to the level of curl but it doesn't have a marketing budget and it's not looking out for investors so "normies" don't know it exists or why it exists but it works.
The old memes of opening a word file and finding garbage is becoming less and less true. Cross compatibility with a moving target that is ms office is a Sisyphean task
I've always tried to like Libreoffice but I'm leaning more towards Only Office these days. Libreoffice just feels stuck in the past and their recent feuds with other office suites is drama I just don't want anything to do with.
