Yeah, in my particular "land of the free" (the one everybody thinks of when you say that), there are actually laws on the books in many states and local jurisdictions which make it illegal to start your own cooperative/municipal ISP. I know the brochure says nice things about this country, but it's really not as great as it sounds.
